GABRIEL DE URIOSTE: Hillman Curtis 1961-2012 →
gdeu:
Yesterday, my cinema hero and mentor, Hillman Curtis, died after a long battle with colon cancer.
Back in the summer of 2008, my friend Matt showed me Hillman’s short film Roof while we were working at the NYU Production Center. It’s a beautiful and chilling film and it instantly had me hooked….
Read the entirety of Gabe’s post about his personal experience working with...

Please Help Me Sleep: Use the Internet to... →
Last night I broadcasted myself sleeping live on the internet and last night my dreams were altered by the online presence of both friends and strangers… and I’m doing it again tonight.

Sunday night was the first of what is seeming to be a series of nights where I live broadcast myself sleeping on the social video chat service Tinychat. The original...

Please Help Me Sleep Tonight →
Starting tonight I am going to broadcast over the internet a live video feed of myself trying to sleep that you can interact with in real time.
http://tinychat.com/jdamato
Over the years I have acquired a horrible habit whereby I can’t get to sleep unless I hear voices or music or other things going on around me. I most likely picked this up while living in an East Village apartment that...

What You're Doing Right Now Will Be in Your...
My creative turnover has roughly tripled in the last month and I’ve been unable to sleep most nights. Here is where my mind is at:
It is my experience that trying to specify your creative voice is often like trying to think about thinking harder. The more you try, the more you are just distracting yourself from actually achieving the mission. I’ve relented to the notion (perhaps...

The Aftermath of My Optical Illusion Illusions
I just found out that I may be responsible for the confusion (or creation) of some skeptical Australian children.
About a year ago I received the above email from the producer of an Australian television show regarding a series of images that I made two years prior called Optical Illusion Illusions.
The basic premise of the image series was that I would take famous optical illusions and...

The story behind ( ) at UCB this Saturday.
I know we’ve been quite vague in our promotion of ( ) so I wanted to take a second to talk about our show this coming Saturday night and say thanks to everyone who came out during our initial four week run.
We put an insane amount of work into these shows and during our training phase have tested our limits both emotionally and physically (yes, physically). I can definitely say that...

I’ve been looking through some of the flip video I have from the #AmericaGethard tour and remembering some of the great “off-camera” times we had together. I’ll probably post a few more in the coming days. One of the rituals on the tour involved helping the late night drivers stay awake by shout-singing our favorite songs. Also it was, as Will might say, just silly and fun.

Obscure Youtube: Four Grandfathers Telling Four...
Many people may not know (especially if you didn’t frequent my blog during college) that one my serious unironic hobbies is collecting obscure and otherwise unseen videos on youtube. One of the beautiful advantages of the internet is its ability to show you places, people, stories, and worlds that you would otherwise not see. Furthermore, it’s one of the truest forms of documentation...

Ignoring The Epilogue of Georges Méliès
Recently I have begun the process of recalibrating my creative duty. I’ve spent the last year studying comedy (specifically improv) at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and for the past year I have been in pure “absorption” mode. My role has been as a student. I’ve spent all of my time learning and slurping up every piece of wisdom and experience from anyone who...
